Classic video of the week- Jean Alesi’s 412T2

“Better one Alesi today, than a thousand Schumachers tomorrow.”- homemade banner, Monza, 1995.
The tifosi adored him for his Sicilian roots, and the way he wore his heart on his sleeve. His driving style reflected this passion; all crossed arms and exaggerated head movements as he fought with the projectile he was seated within. 1995 was his best season in terms of outright competitiveness (though he scored more points in 1996 at Benetton) but it yielded him his only victory in Formula One the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Ferrari 412T2 was a wonderful match for Alesi- blood red, sometimes brilliant, usually temperamental. Turn up the speakers and enjoy the legendary Alesi car control as that 17,000rpm 3 litre V12 echoes around the Adelaide streets. Is it the best sounding F1 car of all time? Let us know what you think.

  1. It’s only 13 years ago, but seems much longer; noses on the deck, wide rear wings, straight front wings, slick tyres and Jean at the wheel. I once heard that he said he liked to ‘dance’ with his car..you can see him hustling it thorugh the concrete jungle that was Adelaide. …Wonderful viewing. As much as I love having the race in Melbourne, I really do miss the Adelaide finale.

Gives me goosebumps to hear murray commentating over the screaming V12 again with Jonesy as special comments man.

  2. completely agree greg…as much as i love having the AUS GP at Albert Park, i really loved the Adelaide circuit. If only we could have both…not likely in these days of money-chasing venues.

i really miss that scarlet ferrari…i wonder if/when ferrari loses the marlboro sponsorship, if they’ll go back to the old colour? i certainly hope so.

and for a comment on alesi…i never really appreciated his brilliance until his career was almost over. i’d definitely take 1 alesi over 1000 schumachers, hey i’d even take him over 1 schumacher.
